California-based nonprofit Public Health Advocates takes a neighborhood-based approach to community health. It believes that by transforming local neighborhoods into places that value and contribute to human well-being, health-related inequalities and barriers to healthy living can be diminished.

Public Health Advocates frequently sponsors and follows legislation that can directly benefit public health. It is currently working to further California's AB 18, or the California Clean Water, Climate, Coastal Protection, and Outdoor Access For All Act of 2018.

The bill includes provisions that would make more than $3 billion available for the creation of programs designed to keep California's air and water healthy. It would also enhance and protect a range of public outdoor venues, improving outdoor recreation for residents and reducing problems associated with inequality of access.
